Tot Sewing with Burlap
Please tell me I'm not the only one who has loads of burlap hanging around the house! Here's a great, inexpensive activity for the kiddos to do to work on their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It's also a very calming activity (as is crocheting and knitting for lots) so it's a great way to wind down or do during quiet time.
Here's what you'll need:
- a small embroidery hoop
- a square of burlap
- a yarn needle
- yarn
All you need to do is secure the burlap in the embroidery hoop and cut a 12"+ strand of yarn. If your kiddo is older, they can thread the needle, or you can thread it for your tot. Tie a knot at the other end and let them get to work making whatever sort of design they'd like.
Extension Activities for Older Children:
- offer large buttons to sew onto the burlap
- use index cards with simple shapes for them to re-create on the burlap

What a cute idea ... Not trusting Reagan with a needle just yet!
ReplyDeleteWe will get there.
Oh and Reagan and I absolutely LOVE our Create Abilities for Kids boxes each month.

What a great idea! My twins would probably end up poking each others' eyes out, but I wonder if one of the bigger plastic needles would work as well, since burlap is pretty loose, anyway? Hmm... something to try...
ReplyDeleteYes, a plastic needle would work too. Burlap is pretty flexible for different size needles.
DeleteI am so doing this with my daughter. What an awesome idea!

Our oldest daughter has been practicing with plastic canvas, but I love your idea of burlap.
ReplyDeleteWe'd love for you to share your posts at our Finished Friday Link-Ups!
What a fun idea! I'm not sure if my son would love this idea, but I'm sure I could convince him as long as I use his favorite color of yarn. :)
ReplyDeleteI bet both my girls would like this (5 & 2) Not only would it help my little one with her fine mortar skills but it is just fun! Thanks for sharing on We Made That!
